dhanyaatidhanyapavanena kritaarthamaanee
yogeendradurgamagatirmadhusoodano'pi
tasyaa namo'stu vrishabhaanubhuvo dishe'pi

Even Krishna, whom the greatest yogis cannot reach, felt his life fulfilled when touched by the breeze stirred by the hem of her garment. I bow even to the direction where Shri Radha, daughter of Vrishabhanu, dwells.

ब्रह्मेश्वरादिसुदुरूहपदारविन्द

sarvaarthasaararasavarshikripaardradrishtes
tasyaa namo'stu vrishabhaanubhuvo mahimne

Her lotus feet are beyond the understanding even of Brahma and Shiva; their pollen holds a wondrous glory, and her glance, moist with grace, rains the essence of all that is worth having. I bow to the greatness of Vrishabhanu's daughter.

The Supreme Person is not easily seen even by Brahma, Rudra, Shuka, Narada and Bhishma, yet the dust of Shri Radha's feet wins him over at once, a powder of endless power. I remember that dust.

The generous gopis placed this dust on their heads and so won the place they longed for, together with Krishna's love. For those who worship with feeling it is a wish-granting cow of rasa. I remember the dust of Shri Radha's feet.

She bathes Nanda's son, faint from the arrows of countless Kamadevas, in waves of nectar from the touch of her own form, and so revives him. Glory to that unnamed goddess of the grove.

Krishna himself pleads again and again with her maidservants to be let in. When will I be the one who sweeps the courtyard of the grove where Vrishabhanu's daughter plays?

A peerless lover falls at your feet and begs for an embrace, and you, ocean of delight, answer with a play of your brows, "No, no!" When will I hear those words, Shri Radhike?

A ray from the moon-gems of her toenails is what shone in the gopis. May Shri Radhika, the very essence of the full ocean of love, someday be gracious to me.

Her eyes tremble with love, and her limbs are like waves of a rising ocean of rasa. When will the queen of the new groves of Vrindavan turn her holy glance on me?

sarvasvasamputamiva stanashaatakumbha

The verse turns to the beauty of Radha's form in the frank imagery of Sanskrit love poetry, describing her as the whole treasure of Krishna, the moon of Gokul, in Vrindavan.

सान्द्रानुरागरससारसरःसरोजं

In the same frank imagery the poet compares her beauty to a lotus from a lake of deep love, opened in two by the moonlight of her face, full of the honey of her own bliss.

Again in the imagery of classical poetry, the poet bows to her youthful beauty as a golden lotus bud of the pleasure lake, fruit of the wish-tree of bliss, which enchants even Krishna.

Struck by the arrow of her glance, the prince of Braj faints: the flute falls from his hand, his peacock crown slips and his yellow cloth falls away. When will I serve that Radhika with love?

She is the heart of pure, sweet love, the height of the art of love's play, honoured even by the Lord. More than the queens of the gods, a supreme and independent power: Radha, chief queen of the lord of Vrindavan, alone is the one I serve.

Whoever seeks Govinda's company while ignoring service to Radha wants the full moon without the full-moon night. Those who do not know that she is the seed of the waves of Shyam's love gain only a drop, even from the ocean of nectar.

I bow to the great souls who meditate without end on Radhika, whose form overflows with the sweetness of youth and the joy of love. Rituals have dropped away from them; free of attachment even to religious duty, they have reached the wondrous goal of rasa.

They do not mark conch and discus on their arms, nor draw tilak on their foreheads, nor even wear a tulsi mala at the throat. Who are these great souls, strong only in devotion to the guru?

Whether they perform the rites of the Vedas or not, whether they accept garlands and comforts or give them up, how could those who know the secret of Radhika's beloved ever be judged by outsiders who know little?

Enough talk of worldly things, as repellent as millions of hells. Study of scripture alone is wasted effort, and I fear the liberation that dissolves the self. If Shuka and others are mad with devotion to God, so be it; let my mind sink only into the joy of Radhika's feet.

That beauty, the first bloom of youth, that sideways glance, the sweetness of her lips, that smile, that voice, and that playful walk: none of Radhika's charms can ever be forgotten.

By your grace alone the girls of Braj gained that service which even Lakshmi, Shuka and Narada long for. Shri Radhe, young lady of the new groves, I hope for that ever-wondrous service; when will you cast your merciful glance on me?

Having gained that service by your great mercy, when will I, tasting again and again the sweet remnants of Shri Radha, who has been lovingly put to sleep, be lost in ever-new joy?

Radhe, even if you lovingly send me to your beloved, hear what my devotion will be: my sideways smiling glance will thrill him, I may embrace him warmly, yet still I will taste only the joy of your feet.

The dark fortnight, the new blue lotus, the black deer, the tamala tree, the dark cloud and the Yamuna named Krishna are all dear to you. Why then turn away from Krishna himself? Radhe, when will I say this and see you laugh?

I meditate on the band of Braj girls following Shri Radha in the rasa: their playful glances seem to colour the directions blue like lotuses, and their steps make the earth bloom as if with lotuses.

Your eyes move in you like sweet fish in an ocean of rasa, and your face blooms like a golden lotus in you, heavenly river. Radhike, may waves of your mercy reach me.

A ray from the moon of her toenails is the one wealth desired by millions of Lakshmis, the jewels of wondrous women. May that unreachable young lady, whose form overflows with the deep play of boundless love, accept me in her mercy.

Made restless by the play of the garlanded lover in a jasmine bower on the Yamuna's bank, treasure of ever-new wonder, Radhike, spread the waves of your mercy over me.

The Kamadeva of Vrindavan himself flatters your maidservants, longing for the festival of your favour. Daughter of Vrishabhanu, from whose lotus feet flow waves of deep joy and love, I always bow to your feet.

Said even once it draws the lord of Gokul at once; to lovers it makes every other goal seem small; Madhava himself lovingly repeats the mantra marked with it. May those two wondrous syllables, "Radha", shine in my heart.

Seated in a grove-temple on the Yamuna's bank, Hari meditates like a yogi on the light of her feet and, eyes full of tears, always chants her name. May that supreme knowledge of two syllables, "Radha", always shine in me.

Far beyond gods, devotees, the liberated, and even Krishna's friends, full of the joy of love and blissful to speak: Hari himself hears it, chants it, sings it among the sakhis and murmurs it with tears. That nectar, "Radha", is my life.

She worships her beloved, the jewel of Braj, with mature love, and those who long for Govinda's friendship reach perfection by taking refuge in her. May Shri Radha, the crowning vine of the Vedas, be pleased with me.

Her body shines like millions of lightning flashes, her face spreads joy, her lips glow like new coral, her hands like fresh leaves, her eyes like lotuses. I bow to that light called Radha, sweet with the play of the new groves.

O you with soft, curling dark hair, red lips and moonlike face, eyes that outdo the darting wagtail, a pearl at the tip of your nose, a slender form and lovely bangled arms: Radhe, reveal your own form to me.

In the newly blossomed form of Radha, where youth's lovely prelude begins behind a curtain of shyness and smiles are offered like flowers, Kamadeva sits on a golden throne, and her playful glances show a mastery of the art of dance.

That wonder of beauty, that new youth and enchanting form, that skill in waves of play: a natural festival of love between Radha and Madhava, where nothing is planned, no praise, no fault and no hesitation, may it protect you.

Even Mukunda, dark as a rain cloud and the very form of sweet joy, longs with deep new love to see them. Will I ever see those feet of Radha, wondrous treasures of rasa that work miracles in Vrindavan?

In the language of the hidden pastimes, the poet, as a sakhi who delights only in her mistress's joy, longs to witness through a gap in the grove the intimate love of Radha and her beloved.

In the grove of Vrindavan, full of ever-new joy and humming with bees, the loving couple play, laughing sweetly, throwing things to each other, catching and hiding them. Glory to that playful pair.

न जानीते लोकं न च निगमजातं कुलपर
म्परां वा नो जानात्यहह न सतां चापि चरितम् ।

rasam raadhaayaamaabhajati kila bhaavam vrajamanau
rahasye tadyasya sthitirapi na saadhaaranagatih

Such a devotee knows neither the world, nor the Vedas, nor family tradition, nor even the conduct of the saints. Whoever worships the rasa of Radha and the love of the jewel of Braj in secret, their state is not ordinary.

Some speak only of the bliss of Brahman, some are lost in the joy of worshipping God, others taste the bliss of friendship with Govinda; but for Shri Radha's maidservants even one ray from her toenails is the very limit of every joy.

The secret of Radha and Madhava is not truly known to Brahma and the gods, nor to Hari's devotees, nor to his friends. Alas, I hold the impossible hope of seeing their play with my own eyes as their maidservant.

"Shyama, my eternal beloved, clever treasure of rasa, may my love for you grow firmer again and again," says her beloved; and smiling, she answers, "Dear one, those are the very words in my heart." May that Radha shine in my mind.

One moment with sweet songs, the next on a swing, the next in flower-scented breezes, the next in play: in Vrindavan, sweet with love, the clever young lady and the crown of lovers play together.

At dusk the young Shyam suddenly took her by both hands and led her into the kadamba grove. In the language of the hidden pastimes, the sakhi longs to hear the sounds of their joy.

In the imagery of classical love poetry, the verse describes the playful contest of love between the clever young lady and the youthful lover in their lovely grove.

In her girlhood in Vrishabhanu's house, she sees love between two young people and shyly learns its first lessons; that crest-jewel among girls plays with her friends, gathering a beauty that enchants the world.

In the poetic language of her dawning youth, the sakhi marvels at her beauty, which already enchants the heart, and wonders what it will become.

"Shridama, Subala and friends, what did you see? My startled eyes did not even enter the grove, yet some goddess, flooding the world with beauty, has stolen everything of your friend from afar."

The cows have gone far, the day is nearly over, we are tired, and your mother waits watching the road. You have suddenly fallen silent, eyes wet, face pale, lying on the ground: without you we cannot live.

With a lovely gold-set pearl at your nose, a wave of playful graces, Radhe, enchant the jewel of Braj with the beauty of your jewelled bodice.

She resolved not to look at him, yet keeps glancing from the corner of her eye; she resolved to stay silent, yet says "Go to her!"; she resolved not to touch him, yet takes his hands to push him out. When will I laugh at Radha's failed sulk?

A swan in the deep lake of Radha's heart, a flute pouring nectar in his hand, a swaying peacock feather on his head, lovely earrings, a gunja garland: may that crown of lovers meet me.

He tugs one gopi's new cloth, touches another's hair with his flute, takes another's hand, yet always falls at the root of Radha's lotus feet: so the great charmer wanders the lanes of Braj.

The sakhi laughs: he flirts with this one and that one, pulls a garland here and takes a hand there, yet rolls at Radha's feet. "I know this great rogue well."

Sometimes wandering Vrindavan with his thrilled arm on his beloved's shoulder, walking like a proud elephant, sometimes playing in a secret grove humming with bees: so Hari plays.

Krishna gives no thought to creation, nor to devotees like Narada, nor meets friends like Shridama, nor seeks his parents' affection; knowing Shri Radha alone as the limit of love, he stays in the lanes of the grove day and night.

A bright radiance like new moonlight, jewel among her wondrous companions, her beauty ever growing, bowed with shyness and sweet with a smile, adorned with pearls: by giving herself she delights Achyuta.

Not seen even by Lakshmi, not reached by the Lord's friends, not even imagined by Brahma, Narada and Shiva, found only through the feeling of the gopis of Vrindavan: may that secret service of Radha and Madhava be mine.

Treasure of pure love's play, of youthful beauty, of graceful movement, of loveliness, of great rasa, of the play of love, and of beauty itself, the very treasure of Krishna: glory to Shri Radha.

Your braid, adorned with a jewelled garland and flowers, its dark sheen outshining emeralds, like a throne for the king of rasa: Radhike, when will I behold it?

Chanting "Shyam, Shyam" in syllables that pour nectar, crying aloud in longing, thrilled, restless everywhere, passing the day with great pain and angry at the sun for not setting: may Radha protect us.

Sometimes singing of her beloved's play, sometimes imagining their coming meeting, sometimes murmuring sweetly "Let go, let go": when will Radha, passing the day like this, give us joy?

Shri Govinda, the crest-jewel of Braj's women, whose feet you love more than millions of lives: may she accept me into her wondrous service. Lord, I pray to you for this again and again.

Holding in my heart the youth with a peacock crown, blue as a lotus, in a garment golden as molten gold, I meditate on him, so that Radha, the abode of joy, pleased, may grant me her service.

Meditating day and night on the one with the peacock crown, chanting his name, serving his feet, repeating his mantra, yet holding service to Radha's feet as my highest goal: when will I, by his grace, overflow with love?

Singing songs of Radha's and Krishna's beauty and qualities, offering gunja garlands and peacock crowns, pleasing you with betel, garlands and perfumes sent by Shyam: when will I be lost in the glow of your toenails?

क्वासौ राधा निगमपदवीदूरगा कुत्र चासौ

Where is Radha, far beyond the reach of the Vedas, and Krishna who dwells in her heart? And where am I, worthless and lowly? That her name still shines in me is the glory of Vrindavan alone.

Meditating on Radha, the tender form of love who plays with the crown of lovers, when will I leave this body in Vrindavan and become her maidservant, the furthest limit of the fragrance of her lotus feet?

हा कालिन्दि त्वयि मम निधिः प्रेयसा क्षालितो भू

O Yamuna, my treasure has been washed by her beloved in you; O wondrous trees and vines, you have known the touch of her hands; O parrots, deer and peacocks of Radha's grove: I bow and beg your kindness again and again.

The Yamuna, carrying the saffron washed from Radha in her water play, shining like a blooming blue lotus: may she always rekindle my dull heart.

All who belong to wondrous, sweet Vrindavan, even those who seem harsh or sinful and unfit to be seen, are in truth forms of joy worth beholding by the greatest yogis. Seeing them as they truly are, I hold them all worthy of worship.

यद्राधापदकिङ्करीकृतहृदां सम्यग्भवेद्गोचरं

Seen truly only by hearts that have become Radha's maidservants, never reached without the touch of her grace, giving the essence of love even to the most sinful: may that wondrous, hard-to-enter glory of Vrindavan shine in my heart.

When will I live in holy Vrindavan, witness of Radha's play, intoxicated with love, and see my own tender divine body there, fitting for service in the radiant grove?

यत्र यत्र मम जन्म कर्मभि

Wherever my karma takes me to be born, in hell or in the highest heaven, may the circle of Radha's grove always shine in my heart.

Where am I, foolish, and where that rasa, the essence of supreme joy? Yet my words, flowing from telling the glory of Radha's feet, are filled with the glow of her toenails as she plays in Vrindavan's tender groves.

Shri Radhe, whose glory is sought even by the Vedas, the wise and the Lord himself, by your grace alone I was made fit to write this hymn. Though I always fall short, I hope in you alone; you with loving tear-filled eyes, grant me your love.

If you long for wondrous joy, wise ones, take this hymn called Rasa Sudha Nidhi and drink it through the vessels of your ears.

About the text

A prayer to Shri Radha from Vrindavan

Who composed it

Shri Hit Harivansh Mahaprabhu, who founded the Radhavallabh Sampradaya in Vrindavan in the sixteenth century and also composed the Shri Hit Chaurasi. The tradition places Shri Radha at the centre of worship, and this hymn is addressed to her from beginning to end.

What it asks for

Not wealth or liberation but service: to sweep the courtyard of her grove, to carry her garlands, to hear her voice. The poet speaks as a sakhi, a companion of Shri Radha, which is the stance of the whole Radhavallabh path.

This edition

The text is our own typesetting, checked verse by verse against the 1950 edition with Hindi commentary by Baba Hitdas, which is in the public domain. Where the copies circulating online differ from that edition, we follow the printed reading.

Two names, two traditions

The same work is also called Radha Rasa Sudha Nidhi. Gaudiya editions attribute it to Prabodhananda Saraswati and number the verses differently. This page follows the Radhavallabh tradition, in which Premanand Ji Maharaj took diksha.

For another hymn to Shri Radha recited across Vrindavan, see the Radha Kripa Kataksh Stotra, and for the hymn to Shri Yamuna Ji, the Yamunashtakam.

It is the same work under a longer name. Some editions, especially in the Gaudiya tradition, attribute it to Prabodhananda Saraswati and arrange it differently; this page follows the Radhavallabh tradition and its numbering.
