That is not a reason to avoid it. Brass is the ordinary, correct and traditional metal for a small household murti, it casts well, it lasts indefinitely and it costs what it costs. The reason to point at the contradiction is that ashtadhatu commands a large premium, and a buyer paying for one should get one. If the eight metal composition genuinely matters to you, buy from a seller who will state it alone and without hedging.

At eight centimetres this is a small object, and small brass castings have a specific weakness: detail. A five faced form packs a great deal into very little space, and in a small mould the outer faces tend to soften into the mass around them. The difference between a sharp small casting and a muddy one is entirely visible in photographs, and it is the main thing worth comparing between listings at this size.

What the size buys is portability. This will sit on a car dashboard, in a desk drawer, in a bag on a journey or on a shelf that has no room for anything larger. Hanuman is very commonly the murti people keep in a vehicle, precisely because of the association with protection on the road, and a hundred and fifty grams is light enough to fix down safely.

Hanuman fits easily into Vaishnava practice, being the servant of Rama and the usual picture of devotion carried all the way through. Nothing is odd about one in a Braj home. What to look for before buying

Treat ashtadhatu claims with care. Ashtadhatu means a specific eight metal alloy and it costs considerably more than brass. Listings use the word loosely, sometimes alongside a contradictory description of the same item as brass. If the composition matters to you, ask the seller to state it without also calling the item brass, and be sceptical of an eight metal claim at a brass price.

Look hard at the outer faces. Small moulds struggle with fine detail, and the five faced form is mostly fine detail. Zoom into the photographs and check that all five faces are separately readable rather than merging into the crown. This is the single clearest difference between a good small casting and a cheap one, and no amount of polish will improve a soft mould.

Check the base for a flat seat. Small murtis tip easily, and a base finished roughly or left with a casting sprue will rock. Look for a photograph of the underside. A murti that rocks on a desk is a minor annoyance; one that rocks on a car dashboard will eventually end up on the floor of the car, which is how small brass pieces get dented.

Keeping it, and where it sits

Dry cloth, and rarely. Small brass pieces need almost nothing: a wipe when they look dull is the whole of it. The instinct to bring them back to a bright shine is what causes most of the wear seen on old household murtis, since repeated polishing slowly rounds off exactly the fine detail you paid for.

If it is kept in a car, fix it down. Dashboard adhesive putty or a small non slip pad is enough, and it solves two problems at once: the murti stays upright, and it does not become a loose object in a sudden stop. Dashboards also get very hot in an Indian summer, so check any adhesive occasionally rather than assuming it has held.

Keep it out of humid places. A bathroom shelf or a damp cupboard will give brass a dull film and then green deposits in the crevices, and on a piece this small the crevices are where all the detail lives. A dry shelf keeps it looking the same for decades with no effort at all.

For an occasional proper clean, lemon juice with a little salt, or tamarind, rubbed gently with the fingers and rinsed and dried at once, is the traditional method and it works. Do it seldom. Never use a scouring pad or a wire brush on a small casting, which will scratch the surface visibly and permanently.
