In short
- Date: Tuesday 24 November 2026.
- Dev Diwali: the ghats of Varanasi are lit with lamps.
- Also Tripurari Purnima, and Guru Nanak Jayanti.
- It completes the Kartik vows that began on 27 October.
A day with several meanings
- Dev Diwali: the gods are said to celebrate Diwali on this night, and Varanasi lights its ghats
- Tripurari Purnima: Shiva's victory over the demon Tripurasura
- Guru Nanak Jayanti: Sikhs celebrate the birth of Guru Nanak on Kartik Purnima
- End of Kartik: the month-long vows and deep daan are completed
How it is observed
A dip in a holy river at dawn, lamps in the evening, charity and a fast or simple meal are the common observances. In Vaishnava homes the last five days of Kartik, from Ekadashi to Purnima, are kept as Bhishma Panchak with extra austerity.
Complete the month the way you began it: one lamp, and the name.
Varanasi and Vrindavan
Premanand Ji Maharaj spent years of his early renunciation on the ghats of Varanasi before coming to Vrindavan; read his life story. Both towns are at their brightest on this night.
The heart of it
Whatever the festival, the practice he teaches stays the same: the name. See how to start naam jap or keep count with the naam jap counter.
