In short
- Date: Friday 20 November 2026.
- Ekadashi tithi (New Delhi): about 7:15 AM on 20 Nov to 6:31 AM on 21 Nov.
- Many Vaishnava communities observe it on Saturday 21 November.
- It ends Chaturmas, and weddings resume after it.
What the day marks
Vishnu is said to go into yoga nidra on Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha and to wake on this Ekadashi in Kartik. The four months between are Chaturmas, when weddings and similar ceremonies are traditionally postponed. Dev Uthani closes Chaturmas, and the wedding season opens after it, beginning with Tulsi Vivah.
Why two dates
When the tithi begins after sunrise on one day and ends just after sunrise the next, traditions differ. Smarta households generally keep the 20th. Many Vaishnava communities, including much of Vrindavan, apply the rule that Ekadashi must not be touched by Dashami at dawn and keep the 21st. Follow your own family or temple.
Follow the date your temple or family follows.
Keeping the vrat

- The dayNo grains or beans; fruit, milk, or nirjala if your health allows.
- The nightJapa and kirtan; many keep a jagran.
- ParanaBreak the fast the next morning after sunrise, within the Dwadashi time given by your panchang.
Full food rules: Ekadashi vrat rules. The sick, pregnant and elderly should not attempt a hard fast.
The heart of it
Whatever the festival, the practice he teaches stays the same: the name. See how to start naam jap or keep count with the naam jap counter.
